Hate Crimes Prevention Club

The Hate Crime Prevention Club exists to provide education, resources, training and skills development to empower immigrant adolescent girls who are potential victims of hate crimes with the capacity, the skills and the knowledge necessary to become informed and proactive peer educators.

These young women of immigrant diverse backgrounds can go on to establish anti-hate crimes clubs at their respective schools and conduct educational and awareness raising activities that will serve to respond to hate crimes victimization.

GOALS

  • To learn about and understand hate-crimes and victims’ rights.
  • To become more informed of the available resources and support systems for victims of hate-crimes.
  • To provide leadership training and skills development for participants so they can be peer educators and raise awareness about the issue of hate crimes in their communities.
  • To raise awareness in the community about the impact of hate crimes and promote acceptance and tolerance.

 

BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS

  • Increased knowledge on issues of hate crimes and victims rights, and of existing supports and resources for victims of hate.
  • An opportunity to fulfill volunteer requirements.
  • Increased sense of belonging to a group.
  • Increased friendships with other girls from similar and different backgrounds.
  • Developed or increased leadership skills and capacity.

IN THE FUTURE

  • Establishing three student-led PowerZone Anti-Hate Crimes chapters in three Hamilton high schools.
