Learn to Speak, Read and Write English

Enhance your ability to speak, read and write in English to participate fully in the community of Hamilton. The Immigrant Women's Centre provides Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) in a participatory, enriched environment, facilitated by fully qualified and caring instructors.

Our LINC program offers classes for levels 1 to 7 and Literacy at three locations in Hamilton. Full-time, part-time and evening classes are available. Day-time classes include free child minding and all of our LINC classes include bus tickets.

We have classes for men and women and classes for women only at our Hamilton North and Hamilton Mountain Sites.

LINC Telephone Skills Program

With a strong focus on English telephone communication skills and workplace culture and communication, this special LINC program provides students with language skills to secure and maintain employment.

Classes are delivered in our state-of-the-art telephone lab, where students learn:

• Key expressions and vocabulary for business telephone
• Strategies for successful calls
• Key skills including leaving & taking messages, problem solving, making appointments
• Business and workplace vocabulary
• Clear workplace correspondence
• Writing memos, email, presentations and more!

Who can attend LINC classes?  

All adults over the age of 18, who are permanent residents or conventional refugees or those whose application for Permanent Residency is being processed in Canada can participate in LINC classes. Canadian citizens, refugee claimants and temporary residents (such as foreign students, foreign workers and visitors) are not eligible for LINC.
